{"id":1232,"date":"2024-09-28T22:13:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T22:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/filipzajac.me\/?p=1232"},"modified":"2024-09-30T03:09:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T03:09:43","slug":"musk-faces-1-9-million-fine-to-end-x-ban-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/filipzajac.me\/index.php\/2024\/09\/28\/musk-faces-1-9-million-fine-to-end-x-ban-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Musk faces $1.9 million fine to end X ban in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil&#8217;s Supreme Court said that the social platform X, owned by Elon Musk, owes a fine of 10 million reais, which is about $1.9 million, to end<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/4857711-x-officially-down-in-brazil-after-musk-feud-with-judge\/\"> its ban in the country<\/a>, building off a separate  $3.3 million fine <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/4879133-brazil-unfreezes-starlink-x-assets\/\">previously ordered<\/a> by the court, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/brazils-top-court-rules-x-must-pay-pending-fines-resume-service-2024-09-27\/\">reported <\/a>on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>X has been banned in Brazil since late August after a judge ruled that the social platform did not comply with orders\u00a0related\u00a0to restricting\u00a0hate speech and naming a\u00a0local legal representative.<\/p>\n<p>The payment of the $1.9 million fine would allow X  to \u201cimmediately return to its activities in national territory,\u201d according to the country&#8217;s court. <\/p>\n<p>The social platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/x-asks-brazils-top-court-allow-it-resume-services-source-says-2024-09-26\/\">told <\/a>the court that it had blocked nine accounts probed for hate speech in compliance with orders to stop spreading misinformation, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ordered that assets from X and Starlink pay the $3.3 million fine earlier this month, and Reuters reported that X may challenge the $1.9 million fine.<\/p>\n<p>Musk had labeled the orders as &#8220;censorship&#8221; and has called the judge a &#8220;dictator,&#8221; Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Hill contacted X for comment.<\/p>\n<p><em>Updated at 7:57 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil&#8217;s Supreme Court said that the social platform X, owned by Elon Musk, owes a fine of 10 million reais, which is about $1.9 million, to end its ban in the country, building off a separate $3.3 million fine previously ordered by the court, Reuters reported on Friday.
